Health, Safety and Environmental Specialist

Our client company, a World Leading Refrigerated Trailer Manufacturer, is seeking motivated Health, Safety and Environmental Specialist to join their growing team in a fast-paced manufacturing plant in Sarnia.

The Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Specialist is responsible for supporting and facilitating the implementation of environment, health and safety programs designed to assure compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements in a manufacturing facility. The HSE Specialist will promote the maintenance of safe and healthy working conditions and recommends measures to reduce or eliminate industrial accidents and health hazards in compliance with regulations.

 

Responsibilities

·     Partner with site leadership and company HSE consultant to improve safety programs by evaluating existing programs, identifying areas of concern and implementing solutions.

·     Implement and monitor Health and Safety and Environmental programs to ensure compliance with local regulations and company standards, including Joint Health & Safety Committee, claims management and training.

·     Assist in the development and implementation of site-specific HSE goals and targets. Produce monthly analysis of safety documentation and statistics.

·     Liaise with HSE consultant to develop and implement site-specific training plans. Facilitate H&S training sessions at the site to ensure adequate safety awareness at all levels of the organization.

·     Assist site managers in completing periodic occupational health and safety hazard and risk assessments and ensure that all corrective actions are completed, and root cause analyses are taken.

·     Conduct Health & Safety compliance and system audits for the facilities.

·     Perform the incident investigation process and maintains accident prevention activities across the site.

·     Responsible for WSIB and Short-Term Absence claims management and the return to work program, to ensure employees return to their pre-injury duties in a timely manner.

·     Provide guidance and direction for occupational hygiene concerns, hazardous material management, ergonomics and environmental issues.

·     Provide administrative support and leadership to the Joint Health and Safety Committee, (e.g. hazard identification and accident prevention) and coordinate follow-up actions on the committee’s recommendations.

·     Coordinate the Health and Safety awareness program, including Employee Communication Meeting presentations, Safety Talks and Safety Bulletins.

·     Maintain safety records, statistical data, and information including, but not limited to, safety manuals and site-specific safety programs.

·     Update emergency response documentation (i.e. evacuation checklist, fire plan, etc.) and coordinate annual emergency drills.

·     Collect and log daily pre-shift inspections on all equipment/machinery.

·     Assist with continuous improvement activities.

·     Support with creating content for monthly meetings and employee meetings.

·     Support annual H&S and Environmental audits, accountable for successful conformance on all periodic Environmental, Health & Safety audits.

·     Maintain quality documents in compliance with the company’s quality system requirements and ensure compliance with ISO 9001.

·     Maintain strict confidentiality of all information obtained, written or verbal and maintains a professional, service-oriented manner.

·     Follow and model safe working practices and promotes safety in the workplace.

·     Perform special projects as assigned.

·     Travel to company client sites as required.


Minimum Qualifications:

·     University or college diploma in occupational health and safety or related field.

·     Three (3) years of hands-on experience in industrial health and safety or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

·     Sound knowledge of environmental, health and safety management (ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001/45001).

·     Knowledge of health and safety regulations and risk assessment processes.

·     Ability to drive change and assist in building a leading class safety culture.

·     Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations, confront issues directly and hold others accountable.

·     Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.

·     Demonstrated flexibility within a fast-paced challenging environment

·     Strong team player who takes initiative to identify, investigate, problem solve and make recommendations to resolve problems

·     Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement principles required

·     Proficient in MS Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications:

·     Previous experience in manufacturing (automotive).

·     Automotive experience in OEMs as an asset, Tier I & Tier II environment, with strong knowledge and understanding of fit and function, assembly process and technical competencies

·     CSP, CRM, CRSP and/or CHSC designation.
